Tips for Placing Your Storm Shelter

Deciding to purchase a storm shelter is one of the best investments you can make to ensure the safety and security of you and your family during both a natural disaster or intrusion of your home. Once you own your new storm shelter, the only question left to be answered is, where do you put it?

The very first thing you should think about before deciding on a location for your storm shelter is how convenient it is to get to the shelter. In the event of a disastrous tornado, the last thing you want is to be stuck in a Wizard of Oz situation where you have to frantically run across the yard in the middle of the storm and somehow get in the door safely (and don’t forget the dog).

Ideally, it would be best to have the storm shelter located in your home. However, if you already have an existing home, that is easier said than done. If you have the budget and the crew to get your storm shelter installed in your existing home, it would be best to locate the shelter in your garage or in the basement. It is important that the shelter is placed on a concrete floor. If you don’t have a garage or basement, you can locate it anywhere else in the home as long as there is a concrete base.

If you need to have your shelter located outside due to space or budget restrictions, it would be most beneficial to place the storm shelter next to the back door or even near the garage door. Again, the key to placement is convenience and a concrete base, so if it must go outside, make sure the shelter is as close to your home as possible and installed with the appropriate flooring.

On the other hand, if your home is in the process of being built, there are a number of possibilities for where to place your storm shelter. As mentioned above, we suggest installing your storm shelter in your garage or basement. However, as long as it has a concrete base and is convenient and easy for you to get to, that is what is most important. Whatever location you decide on, make sure to work it into your building plans.
